Rollin’ Down the River

Sun hat and polarized shades are the attire for our first day of the journey downriver. The skies are clear and the temperature mild.

The Yanmar is running smoothly. I play with the stuffing box as we go, trying to adjust the packing compression to the right amount of dripping. The nut pops completely off twice before the assembly finally settles in to allow about one drip per second and the shaft remains just warm to the touch.

Freeport Bascule Bridge

The Freeport Bridge is a double-leaf moveable bascule bridge. We heard that it and the Paintersville Bridge were designed by the same man who designed and engineeered the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Paintersville Bascule Bridge is near Courtland, a large pear-growing area. The Pear Fair is a popular family event. The light grows golden as the sun nears the horizon... we must get to Steamboat Slough before dark!
