Now we're getting down to details in the galley. This is the port side where the mahogany refrigerator/freezer has been built in. It is removable if servicing is necessary.

The unfilled openings next to this unit will have full-extension drawer-like shelves on top and a corral below, both with tambour doors. The sink goes in the center, with sliding doors below. The still-white door is really a tilt-out trash bin. The green, which we call "Great, Grey, Green, Greasy Limpopo River" (from Kipling's Just So Stories, How the Elephant Got His Trunk), is the final color.

The top section is the reefer which uses cold air from the freezer below with a thermostatically controlled fan. We are installing a FrigoBoat 12-volt system with the keel cooler. I built the box using pink rigid styrene foam from Home Depot, two layers, sheathed with fiberglass. Then the outside is further insulated with homemade vacuum panels of HeatShield. From my calculations, I should get R48 in just two inches of space.

Refrigerated space is small, as you can see. I'm sure we'll find ways to cope. After all, there are many successful cruisers with no refrigeration at all.

The latches were ordered from a refrigeration supply house– the smallest commercial ones we could get!
